About the Redwoods

Mighty Redwood trees grow from the Northern California Coastal Region of Big Sur up to the Oregon border. Only along California's Redwood Coast, not far from our Victorian village of Ferndale, do these magnificent trees achieve their majestic primeval glory. Here, untouched groves will stagger your senses. Make the pilgrimage to the Northern California Redwoods and discover why they are much more than the world's tallest trees, California Redwood Forests are truly nature's cathedral. Experience a reverence as you pass between the lofty green pillars. High above sunlight filters through the canopy like a great stained glass window.
A short day trip to the California Redwood Forest added to your relaxing stay at the Redwood Suites makes for a wonderful vacation of scenic beauty.
Coastal Redwoods
A Redwood Cone starts out the size of an olive. Each cone contains between 60 to 120 seeds. One tree alone may produce up to 10 million seeds but only a few will reach maturity. It takes just the right spot for the seed to settle so it may grow into a tree. Resistance to natural enemies such as insects and fire are built-in features of a Coast Redwood. Diseases are virtually unknown and insect damage insignificant thanks to the high tannin content of the wood. Thick bark and foliage that rests high above the ground provides protection from all but the hottest fires. Some of these amazing beauties will live more than 2000 years!

With heights at 350+ feet (imagine a 35-story skyscraper), the splendor of the Mighty Redwoods is awe-inspiring. Imagine standing beside the tallest living thing on the planet. Amazing.
Carpeting the forest ground is a variety of moss, huckleberry bushes and ferns. Stroll through Fern Canyon and you just may spy a Roosevelt Elk enjoying his afternoon repast. This fern-lined canyon, with miles of well-groomed trails, was used in the filming of Jurassic Park.
Temperatures range from 40 to 60 degrees year round along the Redwood Coastline. Summers are mild with warmer temperatures inland. Winters are cool with considerable precipitation. Always pack your rain gear and good walking shoes for the slippery rain forest.
Avenue of the Giants
